Google
http://www.google.com

Google has a well-deserved reputation as the top choice for search tools. This crawler-based service provides both comprehensive coverage of the web along with good relevancy of results. It's highly recommended as a first stop in your web searching. Using the tabs on the top of the search box on the home page, you can also search for images, discussions/newsgroups, news information, and product information. In addition, its cached links let you find "dead pages" and older versions of recently changed pages.

Yahoo
http://www.yahoo.com

Yahoo is the web's oldest "directory," a data base of links where human editors check links and sort sites into categories. However, in late 2002, Yahoo made a shift to crawlers for its main results, but its categorical subject directory interface still survives. You can use Yahoo as a conventional search engine by putting search terms in the search box, or use its subject categories to "drill down" to the information you are seeking by choosing progressively more specific categories of links. In some cases where it is difficult to come up with appropriate search terms for what you are seeking, this is a valuable capability.

Ask
http://www.ask.com

Ask.com (originally Ask Jeeves) initially gained its reputation as the "natural language" search tool, meaning that you could just type a question into its search box and it responded with results that would answer your query. In reality, it depended on a group of editors who monitored search logs and located what were judged the best sites to answer those common search questions.

OTHERS SEARCH TOOLS TO CONSIDER:

AllTheWeb.com
http://www.alltheweb.com

AllTheWeb features a clean, simple homepage, that not only allows web page searches, but also news and multimedia searches.

HotBot
http://www.hotbot.com

HotBot actually resembles a metasearch engine (for more information on these tools see the Metasearch Engine page) because it allows you to search three major search engines at the same time. Its major advantage, however, is its advanced search features page (see link next to search box on the home page) that allows you to delimit your search by language, region, domain, date, and page content and also to easily perform complex Boolean searches using combinations of terms.
