TIPS FOR PARENTS TO ASSIST SUMMER READERS

Parents are encouraged to help their children select appropriate books for their summer reading from the following book lists. These titles cover a range of reading levels and differ in maturity of subject matter. Students entering grades 1-3 can also participate by being read to.

Visit Your Local Library
Take your children to
get books at our local libraries. The librarians can assist you in choosing books well-suited to your children's reading needs from our book lists.

Try Books on Tape
Available at book stores and libraries, books on tape can be extremely motivational. The tapes also help develop reading fluency when played while your child follows along in the book.

Make Reading a Pleasurable Experience Encouragement and positive reinforcement will make your child want to read more. Negative criticism will only increase feelings of anxiety and frustration in your child.

Provide a Place Free of Distractions
Your child needs a well-lighted, quiet place to read. Total family participation is a good way to achieve this.

Be a Good Example
Be seen reading. You are the best model for summer reading. Share your enjoyment and enthusiasm.

Discuss the Reading
Talk about the book your child is reading. Ask questions that require them to reflect, interpret, and evaluate the book. Avoid simple yes and no questions.
