A Moment of Silence

Commemorates September 11

While the attacks of September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten, the intensity of the feelings and reactions associated with these crises will fade over time. However, there will continue to be certain events that trigger a re-awakening of these feelings and reactions. Among these events are anniversaries such as September 11, 2002. Professional educators and other caregivers need to prepare themselves, their schools, and their students for this anniversary effect. With such preparedness, the anxiety associated with a re-awakening of crisis reactions can be minimized for our students.

Our District will commemorate the September 11 one-year anniversary with a Moment of Silence on September 11 at 9:30 a.m. The following message will be shared at that time in all secondary schools.

Please stand for a moment of silence and respect to commemorate the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Today, our school, our community, our nation and our world are focused on remembering the tragedy and honoring the victims of the September 11 tragedy. Please join me in a moment of silence to remember . . .

  • The innocent men, women and children from all over the world who lost their lives in the plane crashes in Pennsylvania, at the Pentagon, in the World Trade Center and on the streets of New York;
  • The heroic New York City firefighters, police officers and Port Authority officers who lost their lives while saving the lives of thousands;
  • Members of the rescue and recovery teams who worked past exhaustion for months and whose experience at Ground Zero will leave a lasting impact on their lives;

- SILENCE -

Over the past year, Americans have emerged a stronger, more resilient and compassionate people. We have reached out to the injured and continue to support those in need. We will continue to work for a better and more peaceful world.

Thank you.

Elementary schools will conduct business as usual September 11. We are however directing our elementary schools to take the following steps:

  • Encouraging parents to limit student’s exposure to media reports given that the anniversary of such crises typically receive significant media coverage and often include imagery of damage and destruction. Excessive exposure to such coverage can intensify the anniversary effect.
  • Take time to listen and talk to children about what they are experiencing and feeling. The staff will do everything possible to assure students that they are safe and supported.
  • Be prepared to deal with a wide range of behaviors. Staff will explain to children that it is understandable to be upset and concerned.
  • Maintain school routines and implement the curriculum in a consistent manner.
  • Make special efforts to be highly visible on the campus, providing leadership and support during the days prior to and following the anniversary.

For any special circumstances we will have our school psychologists and counselors available for any support needed at the school sites.

Thank you for supporting our District-wide Moment of Silence.
