  • Academic "Block" Classes: small classes (25) of 9 weeks in which students earn 5 credits. Traditional type of class including group participation for motivated students who meet mandatory attendance requirements and complete required work.

  • Credit Completion Classes: Mostly independent learning with open entry/exit. Once the assignment contract is completed, student may begin a new class. Students are required to earn a minimum of 2.5 credits in the 9-week quarter to retain subject credit. However, completion is not an absolute requirement as it is with the Academic Block classes. Falling below the required minimum credit results in credit being transferred to elective status. These classes also serve students needing to complete partial credits.

  • ALPS (Alternative Learning Program for Students)
independent study for students who are not considered good candidates for Mira Monte or who are only studying for State exam. Students meet with instructor one day each week and concentrate on only one or two courses. Requires assignment by administration.

  • State Partnership Academy: A structured program offering a traditional curriculum as well as in-depth career exploration. Academy students may be paired with a business mentor. Community businesses help sponsor this program and provide field trips, speakers, and guidance with curriculum and job placement. The Academy pathways available to students include:
    • Communications pathway: specialized program within the Academy offering an overview of careers in communications.
    • Art Production pathway: review of art-related careers and production techniques.
    • Health Career pathway: introduction to health career in which students have an opportunity to "job shadow" at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center.
    • Street Law: examination of law-related careers, including law enforcement, legal, and paralegal.

SVUSD Online Courses
SVUSD is offering a limited number of online classes, including Civics, Economics, and Calculus BC AP. Students will be registered for these courses during the regular registration process. Some are open to only students at a particular high school where that course is taught. These are offered to students who have impacted schedules or for a course that is not offered on their campus. Students with above average academic skills, strong study skills, and excellent motivation will most likely succeed in these classes. See your guidance counselor for additional information.

Online classes are also available thorugh other sources. The program used for online classes or distance learning must be WASC approved. In addition, there are guidelines for granting high school credits for these classes. The Assistant Principal of curriculum at each school has these guidelines and must approve the course before the student is granted high school credit.
Concurrent Enrollment in Community College
Concurrent or dual enrollment refers to classes taken in Community Colleges that count for high school credit. There are guidelines regarding the type of class that will be approved and the number of credits given for each college class. These classes must be pre-planned and pre-approved by the Asst. Principal of curriculum who will inform the student of the guidelines.
