Adult Education
Due to budgeting difficulties in California, funding to Adult Education programs was reduced. In order to provide the classes that SVUSD Adult Education has historically maintained it has now become necessary to charge enrollment fees and no longer offer discounts.
Eligibility for High School Students
Enrollment in Adult Education for high school credit is as follows:
- 9th - 11th graders must be taking at least 6 periods at their comprehensive high school. Twelfth grade students must be taking at least 5 periods at their comprehensive high school.
- Continuation high school students must be enrolled in at least 4 periods.
- A registration form can be obtained from the high school guidance office (or printed from the website) and must be signed by a staff member. High school students must register in person.
- 11th and 12th graders will be given first priority in registering for Adult Education classes.
Credit Assignment for High School Students
- High school students may take 8 or 15 week classes, in-person or online, to either make-up credits or take additional electives.
- To earn 5.0 credits students must attend class a minimum of 45 hours (15-week classes).
- To earn 2.5 credits students must attend class a minimum of 24 hours (8-week classes).
- Students will be automatically dropped from class after three hours of absence regardless of any reason or "make-up" time.
- Missing or late assignments from online classes are equivalent to class absence time.
- All absence time and online assignments must be made up in a timely manner to receive credit.
- Students may pay lab and textbook fees, if required, in addition to registration fees.
Adult Students
- Classes are open to adults, 18 and over who have completed high school or who have not received a high school diploma. 16 and 17-year-olds are accepted under certain circumstances.
- Adults commonly enroll in Adult Education classes for academic, vocation, or social enrichment; to complete a high school diploma; or to prepare for the GED.
Classes offered through Adult Education vary each semester. A list of current classes and additional information on the Adult Education program is available in the guidance department of each district high school, the Adult Education office, or online at: http://www.goadulted.com.

GED/CHSPE
- The GED (General Education Development Test) is a test of high school level skills in the areas of writing, social studies, science, math, literature, and the arts. Students must be within 2 months of their 18th birthday to take this test. Passing the test earns a certificate of high school equivalency. Preparation classes are offered at Adult Ed. Continuation students may earn credits toward a high school diploma by passing the GED. See http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/gd/ for more information.
- The CHSPE (California High School Proficiency Examination) is offered to 16-year-old students. A Certificate of Proficiency by the State Board of Education is given to those who pass this test. The CHSPE assesses proficiency in basic reading, writing, and math skills. Continuation school students may earn credits toward a high school diploma by passing the CHSPE.
